Where do our excess, waste timbers go?
4 Feb 2025
One of the challenges of working in construction is what to do with our waste timber. We HATE just skipping it when there's clearly way more deserving ways to make use of our offcuts. Most of the offcuts of framing timbers, decking and cladding are too small for general construction purposes therefore sadly of no commercial use.
We therefore sourced and pass our timbers to various charities and recently connected with a fantastic organisation called DadsWork SCIO, a community project in East Lothian, working with fathers and male care givers. They offer support groups, positive parenting classes, workshops on the role of fathers, home visits, trips and outings for fathers and their children and is a safe place for dads to meet other dads and talk about their experiences
They were looking for excess timber to use for various projects within the organisation so we were happy to help! We were delighted to see the fruits of their labours recently and hear of some of the amazing stories of the projects they've been involved in, utilising Outside In waste timbers!
GUTTIN' QUINES FILM - THE TROUGHS!
The team were approached by a fourth-year BA (Hons) Film student at Edinburgh Napier University asking for some help with her forthcoming film!
Set in a fishing village on the East Coast of Scotland in the 1920's, the film follows Jeannie, daughter of a farming family and wife of a fisherman. Working alongside the Scottish Fisheries Museum in Anstruther, some specific props were required to set the scene, one of which being a trough that would have been used for fish gutting but was difficult to source. In stepped DadsWorkSCIO who were right on task to help by constructing this huge trough to their specific needs and taken to the filming location in Pittenweem. The trough will return to the organisation where it will again be recycled locally into other projects!
Watch a promo video below about the amazing film the troughs will be used in.
Here are some more examples of the uses our timbers are being put to!
